Post 13: Setting!
One of my favorite shows is New Girl and the show is about a odd girl who moves into a loft with three male strangers. The whole show is very funny and just goes through all the sweet and peculiar events these 4 share. The setting of the show goes along perfectly with the plot with it being located in Downtown LA's Arts District. It just goes along with both aspects of the main girl's quirkiness and then the rough edges of the other three guys.
I think it also helps that is a downtown which are typically fast-paced with a lot to do- just like the show, which is fast-paced with there always being something interesting happening!
I think this is a good example of just how important a setting is to any piece of media, including sitcoms. They provide a basis for which the audience is able to understand the world the characters live in, as well as providing the conflicts the characters face during the story. Like you said, the setting of this show most likely provides ample opportunity for the writing team to bring conflict into the show.
ReplyDeleteI have watched New Girl before and it is well written. I think the setting helps to make the show great, along with the lines and the hilarious characters ( definitely Schmidt, he is so funny). The apartment, the city, and the characters make the show really amazing to watch. I think if it was set anywhere else, it would not be the same.
