Post 14: Modern American Women vs. Nora
Comparatively, the way women in modern America live and the way Nora lived and was treated in her play are entirely different.
To begin: finances- Nora is able to spend 'their' money but is always being told she is spending to much by her husband making the money. Nowadays, it is much more typical for both the husband and the wife to be have jobs and make the money. Additionally, it is also now common for married couples to have separate bank accounts, so women wouldn't need permission to use whatever they wanted out of their own money.
As well as, just the fact that women do work now, and that it wouldn't be demasculizing for Nora to have had a job to help her sick husband nowadays. It would now be a source of celebration and gratitude.
Lastly, another good point would just be that women nowadays not only have lots of opinions, but are allowed and encouraged to share them. If Nora wanted to eat macaroons today, she could, and if she wanted to eat a box of donuts, she could. Women today have a lot more free will and aren't under the authority of their husbands.
Overall, women today have a lot more freedom an independence than Nora, or other women in her day.
Women today still play the same roles as Nora did, but unlike Nora it is their choice and not by force. Instead of always depending on their husband for money, women can work and make their own money. It is a good thing that men and women can share the roles in their home. It's all about being equal to each other, not the man being king and ruler over everything. The freedom that women have to is way better than what Nora had.
ReplyDeleteWomen not being allowed to have independence and freedom is one of the main reasons many were unhappy, like Nora. Divorce was never an option, because divorced women were looked down upon, even if they lived in a society where divorce was illegal. And although divorce rates are higher than they were a century ago, this is less because people were happy, and more because people the option to leave an unhappy marriage was not there. Freedom and Independence in an important part.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you and I enjoyed reading your post. I especially agree with the point that you stated as women now a days can have separate bank accounts as this is something great to see with more empowerment.

ReplyDeleteThe fact that women have the ability to get a job, maintain separate banking accounts and have their own legal belongings makes it far easier for women to be independent of men in the modern day. Giving them choice to chase careers independent of men. Achieving their own goals rather than a shared goal. There can still be shared goals however which isn't a bad thing. There is arguably still some room to work though.
